The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a

* Flood Warning the following western Washington counties...
eastern Lewis County...
southeastern Pierce County...

* until 715 PM PST.

* Heavy rain last night and today will cause flooding in additional
areas to the major rivers in the warning area. This will include
other streams and creeks and low lying areas. The heaviest rain is
ending in this area now and streams will soon be cresting and
beginning to fall this evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams... and ponding of water on country roads and
farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

A Flood Warning means flooding is occurring or imminent. Most flood
related deaths occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water
covered bridges... dips... or low water crossings. Never try to cross a
flowing stream... even a small one... on foot. To escape rising water
move up to higher ground.

the Nisqually river near National
* until Wednesday afternoon.
* At 12:00 PM Tuesday the flow was 11233 cfs.
* Flood flow is 8000 cfs.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue to rise and crest near 12000 cfs
around 4 PM Tuesday.
* At 11000 cfs the Nisqually river will flood roads and pasture lands
along the upper reaches of the river from Mt Rainier National Park
downstream to Alder Lake.

... Forecast flooding increased from minor to major severity...
the Flood Warning continues for
the Puyallup river near Orting
* until Wednesday afternoon.
* At 11:00 am Tuesday the flow was 11000 cfs.
* Flood flow is 4500 cfs.
* Minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue to rise and crest near 18148 cfs
around 4 PM Tuesday. The river will fall below flood flow Wednesday
morning.
* Impact... at 16000 cfs... the Puyallup river will cause major
flooding from Orting downstream through McMillan to Sumner. Swift
and deep flood waters will inundate roads... residential areas... and
farms. Sumner sewage treatment plant will be flooded. Erosion will
likely damage levees. Flooding will occur all along the river
including headwaters... tributaries... and other streams within and
near the Puyallup river basin.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a

* Flood Warning for
the Carbon river near Fairfax
* until late tonight.
* At 10:00 am Tuesday the stage was 13.3 feet.
* Flood stage is 13.5 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage around 12 PM
Tuesday and crest near 13.9 feet around 4 PM Tuesday. The river
will fall below flood stage this evening.
* Impact... at 12.0 feet... the Carbon river will flood the residential
areas near Crocker and sections of the Carbon river Rd.

... Flood Watch remains in effect through late Wednesday night...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of western Washington... including the following
counties... Skagit... Whatcom... King... Lewis... Pierce...
Snohomish... .

* through late Wednesday night

* rain... heavy at times... will continue in the Cascades today
through Wednesday. Additional rainfall amounts of 2.5 to 5
inches are likely... while the snow level is 6500 to 7500 feet.
The focus of heavy rain will be over the Washington Cascades
from around Snoqualmie Pass southward this morning... shift
northward this afternoon and tonight... and then decrease on
Wednesday.

* Flooding is possible on the most flood-prone rivers that flow
off the west slopes of the Cascades. That includes the Cowlitz
river... The Reach of the Puyallup near Orting... and the
Snoqualmie... tolt... Skykomish... Snohomish... stillaguamish... and
Nooksack rivers. Other rivers that are Worth watching include
the Skagit and white rivers.

* Another vigorous frontal system will move through the area
Wednesday night through Friday... bringing precipitation amounts
of 3 to 5 inches to the Olympics and north Cascades. The snow
level for that event will be 5500 to 7000 feet.

* People near flood-prone reaches of rivers in the watch area
should prepare for possible flooding during the next few days.
